We’re sharing our top small laundry ideas to help you get the most out of a small space!
As much as we’d hate to admit it, we (maybe some of us more than others) spend a lot of time in the laundry. This is no issue if you have a gorgeous, spacious laundry to do your washing in. However, if you have a small laundry, it can make doing your washing a little more difficult and much less enjoyable; if you can even call it that!
At Flat Hill, we specialise in creating dream laundries for our clients, no matter the size. Over the years, we’ve managed to create some incredible small laundry ideas that make a significant difference in your home. Therefore, we’re sharing our best ideas for small laundries to help you maximise your storage space.
Different Cabinet Types:
Installing different types of cabinets in your small laundry is a great way to diversify the space and keep it feeling open and interesting. This can be achieved by alternating between exposed and closed cabinetry, which also allows you to have products easily visually available when you need them, and to hide bulkier products that might be less visually appealing.
At Flat Hill, we can customise cabinetry to suit your storage needs and the shape of your small laundry.
Install a Drying Rack:
One of the main issues in a small laundry can be drying space, especially demountable drying racks that can take up a lot of precious floorspace. To solve this small laundry issue, a feature that we love installing in our renovations is a feature drying rack between two wall mounted cabinets. By doing this, you are making use of space that isn’t otherwise being used and instead adding in a highly functional element to your laundry. You can even get creative and make a feature out of the drying rack, such as a marble, brass or lucite rod.
Use the Wall Space:
When renovating a small laundry, one of the best design decisions you can make it to build onto the walls and make use of free real estate. Think stacking cupboards on top of each other, placing racks on the wall or mounting your washing machine and dryer instead of having them sitting on the floor. This way, you’ll have much more floor space to sort and fold washing without feeling cramped up.
Pop in a Shelf:
Having shelf space in your laundry is beneficial for so many reasons; it’s a place where you can store products, fold and sort washing – the options are endless. When it comes to choosing a place in your small laundry to install shelves, you need to think strategically in order to maximise space.
At Flat Hill, our consultants can discuss the way you do your washing to create a custom shelving solution that works for you. The great thing about shelving is that there are endless options to suit laundries of any size.
Secret Ironing Board:
One of the bulkiest items to both store or have sitting out in your laundry is your ironing board. While it is essential it does have a tendency to get in the way. Therefore, one of our favourite solutions is to hide your laundry board in its very own stylish storage cupboard! An ironing board cupboard is a narrow cupboard mounted on the wall, with your ironing board attached inside vertically so that it can be easily pulled in and out.
Flat Hill can create a secret ironing board that perfectly fits your ironing board as well as added storage if required.
Have fun with it!
Finally, while this isn’t a storage hack, it’s always important to remember to have fun with your laundry design! Just because you have a focus on functionality and storage, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with tap ware, tiles, paint colours and more.
Some of our favourite laundries are those where the owners have worked with us to add a splash of colour, a stunning tile configuration or a feature tap or basin.
