Bathroom Plants for Your New Renovation

2020 was undoubtably the year of the indoor plant, and 2021 is proving to be no different with our leafy green friends making their way into the homes of more and more people. While indoor plants certainly have their place in living areas and bedrooms, what you may not know is that they’re a great addition to your bathroom space. At Flat Hill, we specialise in beautiful bathroom renovations and love adding plants as part of the finishing touches on our projects. Therefore, we’ve decided to put together a list below of some of the best bathroom plants for your new renovation.

The Benefits of Bathroom Plants

When it comes to indoor plants, many people tend to complain that they can’t keep them alive. However, because many plants thrive in highly humid environments, the bathroom is the perfect place to keep your plants growing. In addition to easy maintenance, shower plants greatly improve air quality and absorb any excess moisture, reducing the existence of mould and bacteria. But wait… there’s more! Plants also boost your mood in the morning, with studies showing that plants reduce stress and anxiety while increasing energy. What more could you ask for?

Bathroom Plants Bird's Nest Fern

Bird’s Nest Fern

Asplenium nidus

The Bird’s Nest Fern is a vibrant green, glossy plant with sword shaped, crinkled edge leaves. The fun thing about the Asplenium nidus is its ability to change its appearance based on the amount of light it gets. The more sun drenched your bathroom is, the more crinkled your plant’s leaves will be. On the other hand, if your bathroom doesn’t get much light, your plant will have flatter leaves.

Bathroom Plants Peace Lily

Peace Lily

Spathiphyllum

Spathiphyllum or Peace Lillies are known for their amazing air purifying qualities, filtering out more toxins than any other indoor plant. This glossy, dark green plant features white blooms, which are actually leaf brackets that grow over the real flowers. As a tropical plant, your steamy bathroom mimics a Spath’s perfect climate – so place one in there and watch it thrive! Pro tip: the lighter your bathroom gets, the more flowers your Peace Lily will produce.

Bathroom Plants Bromeliad

Bromeliads

Bromeliaceae

Bromeliads are a long plant with splaying green leaves, topped with a colourful bloom. These plants are available in a range of different colours including pink, yellow and orange and add a fun pop of colour to your bathroom. Bromeliads are great because they’re low maintenance and easy to water; all you need to do is empty the water out weekly to stop the attraction of bugs- simple!

Bathroom Plants Carnivorous

Carnivorous Plants

Carnivorous plants such as Venus Flytraps are great for bathrooms because of their ability to capture insects. Nobody likes bugs flying around their home, and the average home has enough bugs to keep one carnivorous plant happy, so you don’t have to worry too much about keeping it healthy. Place yours in a small shallow pot or glass terrarium and watch it thrive.

Bathroom Plants Zanzibar

Zanzibar Gem

Zamioculcas zamiifolia

A lazy person’s dream, the Zanzibar Gem is one of the lowest maintenance plants; in fact, it’s almost indestructible and will put up with as much neglect as you want (or don’t want) to give it. These small plants have bright green oval shaped leaves and look beautiful sitting in an elevated mini pot, lasting for years to come.

Bathroom Plants Orchid

Phalaenipsis Orchid

Striking in nature, the Pahlaenopsis Orchid adds a feeling of luxury to any bathroom space. Orchids are native to tropical east Asia, making your bathroom the perfect humid space to house this pretty plant. Orchids are great because they’re low maintenance and will bless your bathroom with beautiful blooms for months on end.
